Sea Turtle Nesting Season in Pass-A-Grille

A Sea Turtle Nest Located 2 Minutes from our Bungalows

It is once again sea turtle nesting season this year and it is important for all visitors and locals to be aware. Turtle nesting season takes place from June to October, but it is important to protect the turtles year round. In Pass A Grille this year between the Don Cesar and the end of the island 28 different turtle nests have been discovered so far.

In order for these hatchlings to survive, it is important that their nests are not disturbed. In each nest, there are anywhere between 100-120 eggs which have a 90% chance of hatching naturally. However, if the nest is disturbed by beach goers their survival rate plummets. This is one reason why sea turtles are endangered.

Another threat they face is light pollution which comes from private residences, hotels on the beach, photographs and headlights. The light disorients and scares the young sea turtles and may prevent them from reaching the water. Beach walkers need to be very careful where they shine their flashlights.

A full grown sea turtle can live to be between 40 and 60 years old and weigh as much as 2000 pounds. The community here is very proud to be home to such graceful animals and we have all rallied together to accommodate their nesting habits.

Enjoy the beach, but please respect our turtle nests.
