The Seahorse Restaurant is Back — And Pass-a-Grille Has Never Felt More Like Home

If you’ve ever visited Pass-a-Grille Beach, chances are you know the Seahorse Restaurant. The little building at 800 Pass-a-Grille Way with the iconic blue seahorse out front, the wooden booths, the smell of shrimp and grits, the kind of breakfast that makes you slow down and actually enjoy your morning. For nearly 90 years, the Seahorse has been the heartbeat of this community.
After more than a year of closure following devastating flood damage from Hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024, the Seahorse Restaurant officially reopened its doors in February 2026 — and the whole island exhaled.

A Pass-a-Grille Institution Since 1938
The Seahorse Restaurant first opened in 1938 as one of Pass-a-Grille’s original drive-in restaurants. During World War II it became a gathering spot for soldiers stationed nearby. Generations of families have claimed their favorite booths. Locals have been meeting here for morning coffee and conversation for decades.
In 2024, St. Pete Beach’s Historic Preservation Board officially granted the Seahorse a historic designation — a recognition of its nearly century-long place in the community. Robert Ripley of *Believe It or Not* fame once described the surrounding 8th Avenue as “America’s Shortest and Most Beautiful Main Street.” The Seahorse has been at the center of it ever since.

The Long Road Back
When Hurricanes Helene and Milton tore through Pass-a-Grille in late 2024, the Seahorse took the full force of the storm. Six to seven feet of water flooded the restaurant, gutting everything inside.
Owner Anayeri Gomez led the rebuilding effort with one clear goal — restore the Seahorse to exactly what people remembered. Old photographs were used to recreate the space as faithfully as possible. The iconic wooden booths came back. The historic memorabilia and beachy decor returned to the walls. Even the beloved blue seahorse out front made it through.
“I think it has become a tradition,” Gomez said. “A place where you need to visit when you come to the area.”
After more than a year of intensive renovation, the Seahorse held its grand reopening ribbon cutting on February 6, 2026. The community showed up.

## Pass-a-Grille Is Coming Back
The Seahorse reopening is more than a restaurant story. It’s a symbol of what makes this little island special. Pass-a-Grille has faced storms before and it has always come back — a little worn, a little weathered, but fully itself.
If you’ve been thinking about visiting, now is the time. The beach is beautiful, the community is resilient, and the Seahorse is serving breakfast again.
