Pass-A-Grille Dog Friendly Retreat!

There's a special kind of guilt that comes with dropping your dog at the kennel before a beach trip. The sad eyes. The wondering whether they'll be okay. At Southern Pass-A-Grille Beach House Bungalows, we think your best friend belongs right there in the sand next to you — which is exactly why our pet-friendly vacation rentals in Pass-A-Grille Beach were made with four-legged family members in mind.

If you've been searching for a dog-friendly Airbnb near St. Pete Beach, keep reading. This little island might just be the most pet-welcoming stretch of the Florida Gulf Coast.

Why Pass-A-Grille Is a Dream for Dog Owners

Pass-A-Grille Beach sits on the southernmost tip of St. Pete Beach, a quiet barrier island just 31 blocks long and one block wide, with the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the Intracoastal Waterway on the other. It's consistently ranked among the top beaches in the United States — and it happens to be genuinely welcoming to pets.

Unlike the crowded resort strips further north, Pass-A-Grille moves at a slower pace. Quiet streets, white sand, local shops, and some of the best sunsets on the Gulf Coast — all within an easy leashed walk of your front door. For dogs (and their people), that walkability is everything. No shuttle buses, no massive parking lots, no chaos. Just you, your pup, and the salt air.

The Pass-A-Grille Dog Beach — Right Around the Corner

Here's the detail that makes staying with us so easy: Pass-A-Grille is home to one of the best dog-friendly beaches in the Tampa Bay area, and it's just a short walk from our bungalows.

The designated Pass-A-Grille Dog Beach sits on the bay side at the end of Pass-A-Grille Way, between roughly 1st and 3rd Avenues (locals will point you toward the access near 2nd Avenue). It's the only spot in St. Pete Beach where dogs are officially allowed on the sand, so it's become a beloved gathering place for visiting and local pups alike. Your dog can splash in the shallow water and dig in the sand to their heart's content.

A few things worth knowing before you go:

  • Dogs must be kept on a leash no longer than eight feet whenever they're off your rental property — this applies throughout the city.
  • With the exception of the designated dog beach, dogs are not permitted on the main Gulf-side sand beaches, so plan your pup's beach time accordingly.
  • The dog beach is free to enter, with metered parking on Pass-A-Grille Way — though if you're staying with us, you can simply walk over.
  • There are no restrooms at the dog beach, so plan ahead.
  • Always bring water, a bowl, and waste bags. Florida sun is no joke, even for a quick outing.

Fort De Soto Paw Playground: A Short Drive to Doggy Paradise

When your dog is ready for full off-leash freedom, hop in the car for the short drive to Fort De Soto Park — a 1,136-acre county park that USA Today named one of the Top 10 Dog Beaches in the country, and that Southern Living recognized among the South's best dog parks.

Fort De Soto's Paw Playground features separate fenced areas for large and small dogs, dog showers to rinse off the sand, cooling stations, and dog-level water fountains. Beyond the fenced park, there's a dedicated dog beach where your pup can run and swim off-leash in the Gulf. The Paw Playground is open daily from 7 a.m. to sundown, 365 days a year. It's the kind of place that turns an ordinary vacation day into your dog's favorite day of the year.

Dog-Friendly Dining and Local Spots

One of the joys of a Pass-A-Grille getaway is that you rarely have to leave your pup behind. St. Pete Beach has dozens of dog-friendly restaurants with outdoor and waterfront seating where your four-legged companion is welcome to join you. Local favorites within an easy trip include waterfront spots like Paradise Grille, Buoys Waterfront Bar and Grill, and The Toasted Monkey, many of which put out water bowls for their four-legged patrons.

After dinner, take a stroll down historic 8th Avenue — once dubbed "America's Shortest and Most Beautiful Main Street" — where you'll find local shops, ice cream, and plenty of friendly faces happy to say hello to your dog.

Our Pet-Friendly Bungalows: A Real Home Away From Home

Southern Pass-A-Grille Beach House Bungalows has welcomed guests to this island since the early 1980s. We're a family-owned and operated collection of four fully renovated historic bungalows — The SeaHorse, The StarFish, The NorthStar, and our Cozy Beach Bungalow — sitting steps from the Gulf on the quiet southern tip of the island.

Each bungalow is equipped for singles, couples, and families, and yes — your dog is family too. When you book a pet-friendly rental with us, you're getting more than a place to sleep. You're getting a home base where the whole crew can relax, unwind, and make memories together, without the stress of leaving anyone behind.
